Running across the Väinameri Sea in the Baltic Sea of Estonia, the ice road from Haapsalu to Pürksi is a challenging experience.
Tucked away in Lääne County, on the western part of the country, the road is 3.2km (1.98 miles) long. It’s the shortest of the six national ice roads potentially opened each winter, cutting the travel time between the towns. While the normal road on land takes around 40 minutes to cover, the ice road enables covering the distance in 10 minutes.
The ice road runs across the Väinameri Sea from the seaside resort town of Haapsalu (the administrative center of Lääne County) to Pürksi, at the center of the Noarootsi peninsula.
