Cerro El Pital is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 2.709m (8,887ft) above the sea level, located on the border of El Salvador and Honduras.
Set high in the Reserva Biologica El Pital, the peak is the highest point in Salvadoran territory and the third from Honduras. Recognized as a key tourist attraction in El Salvador, the reserve is rich in biodiversity, playing host to endangered flora and fauna. The cloud forest has some of the rarest plants and animals in the country, including quetzals and other endangered species.
The road to the summit is totally unpaved. 4x4 vehicle required. Starting from San Ignacio, in the department of Chalatenango, El Salvador, the road to the summit is 12.9 km long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 1.705 meters. The average gradient is 13.21%.
