Road trip guide: Conquering the Devil’s bridge

Devil’s bridge (Satani Kamurj) is a natural bridge located on the Vorotan River near Tatev village, in the Syunik Province of Armenia. It’s one of the most gorgeous and marvelous natural spots of the country.

Devil’s Bridge

The road to this amazing tourist spot is paved (on the eastern side) and gravel (on the western side). It's pretty narrow and steep. It’s called H45. The bridge -one of Armenia’s natural wonders lies in the Canyon of Vorotan River. It is located in the deepest part of the gorge in the depth of 700-800 meters. The part of the canyon, where the bridge is located, is so narrow, that even sun rays can’t reach this part. Over the millennia, wind and water have created this wonder of nature, polishing and piercing the petrified lava. Some people say, that the bridge is called so, because many people got drowned while swimming under the bridge. The width of this natural bridge is 60 m and its length is 30 m.

Located below Tatev Monastery, the natural bridge lies between the villages of Tatev and Halidzor. The road is 13.4 km long. The drive is very scenic but steep. Expect 24 hairpin turns. The road darts out onto the edge of a gigantic cliff, under which, about 500 m below, is the roaring Vorotan river. Twisting unimaginable serpentines, the road descends to the famous bridge. The weather is unpredictable here and if you are driving along a dry autumn road it doesn’t mean that in 300 metres you won’t get in winter with snow-covered mountains and hills and snow glistening like diamonds.
