Highway 1004 starts at the highway 11 intersection in Chiang Mai and runs all the way up to Doi Pui. On the way it passes several viewpoints, waterfalls, mountain temples (Wat Prathat) and a palace. It finishes at the summit of Doi Pui.
The highway winds itself up and around the mountain in a series of tight turns and hairpin bends with short straight stretches in between. Erosion has damaged small sections of the highway mid-way up the mountain.
