Molteno Pass is a mountain pass at an elevation of 1,209 m (3,967 ft) above the sea level, located in the Nuweveld Mountain Range, in Western Cape province of South Africa. It’s said to be South Africa's first mountain pass.
The road over the pass is called R381. It includes gravel and asphalte sections. The surface on this gravel road is often loose, especially along the sides of the road. It links Beaufort West in the Western Cape and Loxton in the Northern Cape.
Heavy or prolonged rain can cause local flash floods that cover the road with water or wash out culverts or bridges. The pass was completed in May 1881, and named after the first Prime Minister of the Cape, Sir JC Molteno.
