Hela Hela Pass is a steep unpaved road in South Africa

Hela Hela Pass is a mountain pass at an elevation of 1.199m (3,934ft) above the sea level, located in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.

The road over the pass is gravel and links the villages of Richmond and Donnybrook. The unpaved sections of the road can be impassable when wet. After rain, sections of road can become decidedly hazardous when fast-flowing creek crossings and slippery mud can cause road closures. Access to the pass is by a fairly steep dirt road into the Umkomaas Valley that continues to a bridge that crosses the Umkomaas River at an altitude of 548m. The pass rises by 651m over 7,19 km to reach the summit at an altitude of 1199m. There are gradients of 1:6 on certain sections of the pass.
The pass is also known as Helehele and Hella Hella Pass. The surface on this gravel road is often loose, especially along the sides of the road. The gravel is lethal when wet, so take it nice and easy and enjoy the incredible views as you gain altitude. About 3/4 way up, there is a 145 degree left hand hairpin.
