Cala Pass, a sensational road in Eastern Cape

Cala Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 1.517m (4,977ft) above the sea level, located in the Eastern Cape, province of South Africa.

The road to the summit is paved. It’s called Regional Road 410 (R410). The pass is 28.6km (17 miles) long running from Khowa, formely known as Eliot, towards Cala, in the Chris Hani District Municipality. The road gains almost 300 meters in elevation over 5,8 km, producing a gradient of 1:19 with some sections at 1:15.

Open to traffic throughout the year, may be closed for short periods in winter when the weather is bad. Snow occurs here regularly in winter where bitterly cold temperatures can be experienced. Subject to heavy summer electrical storms and regular mountain mists.
