Lootsberg Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 1.781m (5,843ft) above the sea level, located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
The road to the pass is fully paved and it’s called N9. At this height, it stands as the highest pass in the Great Karoo. The initial road across the passage was constructed in 1858 by Andrew Geddes Bain. The passage bears the moniker of Hendrik Loots, who met his demise on the former route when his carriage flipped.
The pass has dangerous weather conditions in winters and due to occasional heavy snowfall, the pass has seen several accidents. The pass is 106 km (65.86 miles) long, running north-south from Middelburg to Graaff-Reinet.
