Road trip guide: Conquering Kupferberg Pass in central Namibia

Kupferberg Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2,050m (6,725ft) above sea level, located in the Khomas region of Namibia. It’s one of the highest roads in the country.

Set high in the central part of the country, the pass is located about 30km after Windhoek, the capital and largest city of the Republic of Namibia, in the Khomas Highland plateau area.

How long is Kupferberg Pass?

The road to the summit is entirely unpaved. It’s called C26, and it is 188km (116 miles) long, running north-south from Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, to Tinkeringheib.

Is the road through Kupferberg Pass challenging?

The road is quite steep, with sections over 8%, and partly covered with loose gravel. The climb is less steep coming from the south than from Windhoek. Regardless of your speed, you will likely still smell the overheated components of your vehicle as it struggles along the route.
